On our way to class he told me that his class was just next door to my class. He was taking the advanced history course and he seemed to think that it was the only reason we weren’t in the same class. “What’s your next class?” He asked me once we reached the class. “English with Mrs. Frank,” I answered. His excited expression returned. “That means we will have three classes together! We can walk together,” he said with a smile. The bell rung. “I’ll see you soon,” He called as he ran for his class. I couldn’t believe how happy his smile made me, but at the exact same time I wished it didn’t. I walked into the room and took a seat near the front as usual, Mrs. Sweep had not arrived yet.

The other students in the class stared at me as they waited, and it was slowly pushing my temper. One student came to sit next to me. “Hi, my name is Ashley. What’s yours?” She said in a happy tone. I looked at her. “Kori,” I answered. “I like your mask, it’s very original.” I turned to look at her. She had short black hair, a small figure, and bright hazel eyes. She herself seemed to be into the original look. Her clothes were crazy and out there, yet at the same time very stylish. “Thank you,” I said with a smile, she smiled back. “You’re the first to compliment me on it instead of ask never ending questions.” “I figured as much,” She replied, “I also thought that you could use a friend, other than Josh Void of course. All the guys are jealous of him.” “They shouldn’t be…” I whispered. She gave me a confused look and I shook my head not able or willing to answer her question to that.

The door opened and a short woman walked into the room. She had shoulder length brown hair, blue eyes, and a smile on her face. This was Mrs. Sweep. “Hello class, sorry I’m late.” She started. “I hope everyone picked up the papers at the front so that we can start right away.” A few people stood up and I followed after them with my paper for her to sign. After she signed the sheet she introduced me to the class and then began the lesson. The class went smoothly, my old history class was in the same place so I didn’t need to ketch up. Ashley and I where able to make some small talk after Mrs. Sweep finished the lesson. “Where are you from?” She asked. “I moved her from Vegas.” I answered. Shock crossed her face. “Really? What made you want to move to this small town?” She questioned. “My mom and I wanted to get away from the big city life,” I answered simply. “Where did you live before that?” She asked. “Many places,” My tone weakened a little and Ashley took notice. For the rest of class she only asked very minor questions of me as we worked. I wasn’t use to it, but I was glad to have someone to talk to.

The bell rang and Ashley walked with me to the door. When we step out Josh was there, casually leaning against the wall next to the door, waiting. Ashley waved good bye with a smile and ran off in the opposite direction. “How was your class?” Josh asked when I turned to him and we began to walk to our next class. “It wasn’t bad. I like Mrs. Sweep, and I made a friend.” I said looking up at him. His eyes caught mine. “Good,” He said softly not taking his eyes away from me. “How was your class?” I said looking down feeling the embarrassment in my cheeks. “Boring, I didn’t have anyone to talk to.” I could almost hear him wanting to say you instead of anyone. It was sweet and it made me smile as my face reddened farther.

“So… What is Mrs. Frank like?” I asked after I thought my face was no longer red. “At first she seems very uptight and monotone, but once your in her class for a bit she gets better.” He answered plainly. “She is all about college and getting you prepared for next year.” “It doesn’t sound so bad. At least she can’t be as bad as Mrs. Canten,” I said with a laugh. We walked into the class and I went to give Mrs. Frank the sheet for her to sign. The moment I handed her the sheet she handed me a stack of papers. “This is all the assignments that we are working on at this time, the date that they are due are at the top.” She said. Her voice was monotone, and she had a very clean look to her. I took the stack and my sheet and went to sit down next to Josh. I gave him an amazed look. “I can’t believe she just gave me all this stuff.” I said sifting through it. “There are at least three essays in here, and a research project. Does she really expect me to finish all of this?” “Yikes,” Josh answered. “She is a tough teacher, but I’m sure you can get them done. You look like that kind of girl who does everything before it’s do.” He laughed at his words, the same laugh from yesterday during gym. “What’s so funny?” I asked. “I’ll tell you later,” He didn’t seem quiet so sure about that. “Well your wrong. I procrastinate like no other.” I said hoping he would tell me why he seemed to laugh at himself so often. Mrs. Frank stood up and began to talk to the class. I almost immediately lost focus. The way she spoke seemed like she was bored out of her mind. I tried my best to pay attention but it was a failing battle from the start and I eventually started daydreaming.

“Are you all right?” Josh asked a bit of worry in his voice. I was pulled from my illusions and suddenly felt a wave of nausea. I realized that I was sweating so much that it was rolling down my skin. Shock and fear filled me entirely. Not now! I rose my hand in seconds. Mrs. Frank called on me. “Can I go to the nurse?” I said weakly. With one look at me she wrote a note and sent me off. I walked as fast as my feeble legs could take me, but I was not headed for the nurse. It was too late for that. I needed to home as soon as I could. A wave of dizziness overcame me and I fell into the wall closest to me. You have to keep going. This can’t happen here. I told myself. It was too dangerous for the students. I went to take a step to continue and crumpled to the ground. The heat felt like it was burning my skin, it made it hard to breath, hard to move.

I tried to move but my body would not respond. That was not the worst of it. I could see the darkness clouding my eyes. A door opened some where around me. Had the bell rung with out me realizing it? Had I passed out? “Kori!” A familiar voice said to me. I felt his strong arms flip me over so that I could see him. “Come on let’s get you to the nurse.” Suddenly I was in his arms. “No!” My protest was weaker then I expected. “Josh you need to take me home right now. I know what I have and the only thing that will help me is at home.” My words were barely above a whisper. “Don’t worry I’ll get you there.” He said softly walking down the hall. It wasn’t long before we were to the front doors. One of the assistant principals stopped us. “Excuse me, where are you to going?” He asked. “Kori needs to get home,” Josh answered. The AP looked down at me. “Take her to the nurse and she will call her parents there.” He said. I grumbled in Josh’s arms. Josh would have to follow his instructions if he didn’t want to get into trouble. But maybe there was another way out besides the front doors. Josh seemed to read my mind. “All right,” Josh answered and turned around headed for the nurses office. Once out of sight he dashed to another set of doors near the parking lot.

I cursed under my breath and Josh looked down at me. “What’s the matter?” “I left my keys in Mrs. Frank’s class,” I said angrily. “It’s all right, I can’t drive anyway,“ He said with a smile. “I’ll walk you home.” I was overwhelmed with two emotions at his words. One was of panic, what if we didn’t make it to my house in time? I would be putting anyone in the area in trouble including Josh. Second, an uncontrollable sense of attraction to him. He was going to carry me all the way home.

“Thank you so much for doing this Josh. It means so much to me.” I said. I just hoped that we got to my house before the change started. If that happened I was screwed and so was everyone around me. I couldn’t let it happen again. I couldn’t it happen to Josh. “Don’t worry about it. I’m just glad that I can help,” He said with a smile. I smiled back at him then leaned my head against his chest.
