“Let’s start over,” He said calmly. “My name is Josh Void, and your name is?” I glared at him but decided to play along, I was interested to hear what he had to say. “Kori Aglaia.” I answered. “That’s a pretty name,” He said. Compliments always made things better. “Is this your first day?” He asked. “Yes,” I said waiting for question I knew he was bound to ask. “How has your day been?” “I usual I guess, I don’t like my Pre-Calc teacher.” I felt myself smile. What was going on? That was an answer that you told a friend not an acquaintance. He seemed not to notice my confusion. “You must have Mrs. Canten,” He said, “I don’t like her either.” We both laughed awkwardly then there was a long silence. He seemed to be lost in thought just like I was. He was all right I decided, better then most people I met on my first day. I looked up at the clock the bell was going to ring soon. “I better get going, I don’t want to have to stand in front of the class again.” I said standing. “See you later Kori,” He said softly and smiled.

I smiled back and left tossing my empty plate in the trash as I went. I thought about him on the way to my Latin class. I still couldn’t understand how he managed to be so annoying and so… alluring at the same time. I told myself I wouldn’t fall for some guy and here I was falling. I reached Latin just as the bell rung to go to class. I knew this class was going to be an easy one. My family since it’s beginning spoke Latin fluently. I only took it so I didn’t have to take any other language. Ms. Logina seemed very organized, her desk was neat and the board was very precise on what we were doing today. She was tall with short red hair and a friendly smile across her face. I walked over to her and handed her my paper. “Salve,” She greeted taking the paper and signing it. "Salve,” I said with a smile. “Are you Greek?” She asked handing me the paper. I nodded. “It’s very nice to meet you Miss Aglaia.” She was the first to actually speak my last name the right way. She picked up a chart. “Seat six is empty, you can sit there. And don’t worry I wouldn’t make you stand in front of the class.” I mouthed the words ‘Thank you’ before heading to my seat. The class went by smoothly. I had a lot of free time after I finished all of my work. Many of the people around me asked me questions on what we were doing and they were amazed when I could give them the translation of a paragraph with out even looking at the glossary. Latin was always one of my favorite classes. Everyone was always crazy in one way or another and they never seemed to care about my mask or any of the other things a normal person would ask me. I was dejected when the class came to an end. One, because the class was over, and two, because my next class was gym.

Since I moved my classes got all screwed up so instead of taking a class I want to take I have to take PE for the credit so I can graduate. I wasn’t too happy about that when they told me this. In fact, I was outraged. But there was nothing I could do about it now. I walked into the gym and found the couch waiting in her office. Coach Gath was a very athletic looking woman. Her blonde hair was pulled back and her hazel eyes looked up as I came in. “Ah, Miss Aglaia,” She said taking the paper from me and signing it. “Here is your uniform, your locker number and the combination. Class starts in three minutes, you better get dressed.” I felt my jaw drop, she obviously loved teaching this class, and obviously heard about my reaction to taking the class. Wonderful, another teacher to despise. I ran to the locker room and changed faster then most of the other girls. I was glad that I put a hair tie in my bag before I left for school. I pulled my hair back and walked out into the gym. I froze the moment I stepped into it causing a girl behind me to crash into my back. This was a co-ed class. I suddenly felt very uncomfortable in what I was wearing wishing I could put more on. The coach came out of her office and blew her whistle. “Track day, everyone outside!” She said aloud. I heard a bunch of people sigh around me, apparently they didn't like the idea either.

As I walked to the track I suddenly felt someone walking beside me. I looked over and saw it was Josh. “Oh, Hi Josh.” I said. I felt my cheeks heat up and I looked away hoping he hadn’t seen. “Hi Kori,” He said with a smile, he must have seen. “It’s nice seeing you again.” He laughed at that. I didn’t see what was funny. “What are you doing in this class?” I asked. “I don’t see you as the PE type.” With the strength that he showed at lunch I would have thought he was a wrester or something. “Really?” He said surprised. “What type do you see me as?” I blushed again. “Well-” Coach Gath cut me off. “Everyone run a mile, this is timed.” She said, I felt her eyes on me. I’d show her I wasn’t worth the trouble. Just because I don’t like gym doesn’t mean I’m not good at it. We all lined up at the starting mark then she blew the whistle and we were off. For about a minute the whole group seemed to stay together but after that everyone started to slow. I kept the same pace and made my way to the head of the group in no time. I was surprised when I saw Josh still at my side. He sure was persistent. “You never answered my question,” He said having no trouble keeping up with me. “I got interrupted,” I said not looking at him. “Well?” He urged. I rolled my eyes. “Well, I thought of you as more of the athletics type. Maybe a wrester or something.” I said, again I was confused on how easy it was to talk to him. He laughed. I stared at him in shock. “What’s so funny?” “Your not even close,” He said. “Okay then what type are you?” I inquired. We were all ready on our second lap and a good ways ahead of the rest.

“I’m the writing type,” he informed with his same smile. “Really?” I was amazed. “I would never have guessed. Are you in the creative writing class.” “Yep,” He looked at me from the corner of his eye. “Are you?” He questioned. “Maybe,” I teased. “Then I get to see you tomorrow,” He seemed really happy about that. I wasn’t sure if I liked that or not. We continued talking as we ran eventually passing the slower people. We both finished the mile in five minutes and thirty two seconds. Coach Gath sent us to the bleachers to wait for the others. We talked more now then before since we didn’t need to concentrate on running and I would say that we were to the point of friends. I couldn’t seem to stop myself, even though I knew I should have. I guess deep down I really wanted a friend, someone to talk to. I vowed that he would be the only exception, anyone else and I would be pushing my luck. I knew it would take everything I had just to keep him from getting to close to me. We had to just stay friends. The school day ended quickly after that and Josh offered to walk me home but I told him I had my car. He just smile and told me he would see me tomorrow. I nodded and walked to my car a smile on my face. There were a few people watching as I got into my car and in my rear view mirror I saw their jaws drop. I giggled involuntarily.

It was a quick drive home and when I went inside the atmosphere had changed from this morning. My mother was in a happy mood and so was I for that matter. We made up for that morning in no time. “How was your day?” She asked. “Better then I thought it would be,” There was no hit of a lie in my voice. “How was yours?” “It was good,” She answered. The rest of the afternoon went on in the same happy mood until it was finally time for bed. I told my mother good night and went to my room. After getting dressed for bed I laid down in my bed and thought about everything that happened that day. As my thoughts rambled on they finally came to a stop and I slowly fell asleep dreaming of Josh.

Chapter 2: Predictions
I woke at my normal time, just before dawn when the sky is still filled with stars. I sat on the window seat thinking about my dreams as I watched the sun rise. I felt peaceful, something I hadn’t felt in a while. I didn’t want that feeling to disappear, but at the same time I didn’t want it to proceed any farther. I took my time getting ready for school. There was no point in rushing it with how much time I had. I made my way down stairs and found my mother almost finished with breakfast. “Morning Mom,” I said with a happy tone. Apparently too happy. “Good Morning,” She said a bit surprised by my mood. “This is new. You usually dread going to school for at least the first week. Are you not telling me something.” “No,” I lied. She gave me a wary look. “Really Mom, it’s nothing.” “Just be careful.” Was all she said. I sighed, she knew me too well. We went through the rest of breakfast in silence. Once I was done I rinsed my plate in the sink and placed it in the dishwasher.

“I’ll see you after school, Amo te.” I said the Latin words flowing perfectly from my lips. “I love you too,” She said smiling back. The whole drive to school I succeeded in keeping the speed limit and made it to the school when most of the other students were coming in. I still managed to get a parking spot close to the school nonetheless. Today seemed like it would be even better then before. The sun was shinning above my head and it was warmer then yesterday. Not as warm as I would have liked but warmer.

I was amazed to find Josh standing against closed wall to me. He waved at me with a smile. I made my way over to him trying my best to seem like I didn’t want to run to his side. “Hey Josh,” I said happily. “Hello Kori,” He said with a hint of laughter. “How are you this morning?” “I really good, it’s so beautiful out,” I looked up at the blue sky, “and it’s warmer.” He laughed. “So, what do you have first today?” He asked standing up to his full height. “Umm…” I thought for a moment trying to remember my schedule. “History…” His face lit up. “With Mrs. Sweep,” I continued. His expression faded. “So close, yet so far away,” He said. “Can I walk you to class?” “Of course!” I smiled.
