"Hannah, that's great," I say into the phone, excitement and happiness evident in my voice at least. "I'm so happy for you two, congratulations, this is exciting."
"Danielle," Hannah said, and I could tell by the pause and the intake of breath that this was going to be big. "Will you be my maid of honor?"
For a moment I was stunned into silence. I had known the proposal was coming of course. Tyler had come to me months in advance, years really if you want to go that far, I had known in any case that that was his intention. But even then I would have never thought I would be asked to be the maid of honor. Maybe the best man, but never the maid of honor. Even though I had known Hannah longer, Tyler and I had a special connection.
"Hannah, yes, of course," I said, when I had gotten over the initial shock. "I don't know what to say."
"Don't say anything," Hannah said not wasting a minute. "I called you first, because if I know Tyler, which I do, you've known for months. I have to call Melissa and Julie, they of course are both bridesmaids. I want us all to get together for dinner Saturday night at Joe's at seven. You can make that right? Anyways, you're the best, I'll talk to you later, love you Dee."
The phone clicked and I let it fall along with my hand slowly fall to sit in my lap. Me a maid of honor? That was a crazy thought. I don't know what was crazier. That I was going to have to help make Hannah's wedding perfect or that another one of my friends was getting married. Melissa's wedding two years before had been fast a furious. They had known each other for four months when he proposed, and four months later they were married. But everything seemed to be going smoothly with them. Hannah and Tyler on the other hand, and been together since high school. No one questioned that they were meant for each other. But despite all that, and that Tyler had given me a heads up, I was still shocked and slightly surprised at the news.
Tyler and Hannah were getting married. Melissa was married and had a kid. Julie was well on her way to getting a proposal. And me, me, Danielle, the girl who had boyfriends all through high school, and all through college, was left single in my group of girlfriends. I could tell I was starting to slip into a depressed mood, that would probably lead to a sleepless night if I let it. I was half inclined to. One self pitying night wasn't bad right?
Just at that moment my laptop beeped in it's usual fashion and I saw the the Instant Message box pop up on my screen. My money was on Melissa or Julie, I'm sure they were both bursting with excitement over Hannah's impending marriage. I got up off my bed and sat down in my office chair swirling it around to face the computer that was sitting on my desk. To my surprise it wasn't either one of the girls. But Tyler.
