The endless confines of space spread before me as if to mock the end that I knew was coming. There were so many places unexplored, so much left to the unknown, and I would never get to discover it. It was just too late for me now, but even as the scanner screamed in my ears telling me that my oxygen was depleting at a rate to fast for rescue, I dreamed of that emptiness before me. I dreamed of exploring it all and knowing everything there was to know about something no one understood.
My breathing began to shorten and tears streamed down my cheeks. The light flecking of stars in the distance slowly began to disappear informing me that my vision was failing. This really was the end for me… The only thing left for me was to fade into the non-existent black hole surrounding me.
~~~
“Miss, Miss!” Someone’s voice called in the distance. The word just kept repeating in my head and steadily became louder and louder until I sputtered, water flying from my mouth. I took a sharp, painful breath and then another. Slowly my eyes opened adjusting to the extreme light above me. A shadow fell over me making it much easier to see. “Miss, are you alright?”
The man before me held true concern in his lovely green eyes. I could only nod in fear that speaking would hurt to much. He lifted me up slowly into a sitting position with gentle hands. I looked out at the still lake before me and then up at him. “Where am I?” I asked immediately regretting it. I was right, talking hurt my raw throat and it forced me to cough. The last thing that I remembered was floating in space, inches away from death. How did I end up here on a planet, stark naked, in the arms of some man I didn’t know?
