Chapter 1 Jacob Dalton was no ordinary kid. His parents had abondoned him at a young age, but no orphanage would take him in, for fear of him. His father was cruel man, beating his three year old son every day. He did because he wanted to make sure his son knew his place in the world; a nobody. His father feared him, as did all the people his father told the reason. For Jacob had the power over fire, and, in his dreams, was able to see the future. And so his father beat him instead of orphaning him, for fear that those sharp orange eyes would lay on him, bent on destruction. Jacob's father had told Jacob his mother was dead, though he never said how she died. And that was the end of that conversation. Jacob had never seen a picture of his mother, but always imagined her beautiful. Sometimes, he would look in the mirror searching for features that weren't his fathers. He always heard people say that their kids looked just like the dad or mom, and so Jacob thought that whatever wasn't his dad's must've been his mothers. His father didn't have orange eyes, but somehow Jacob knew these eyes were his own, and not his mothers. So he imagined her with green eyes. Jacob had high cheek bones, giving the illusion he was always smiling. And his laugh was loud and merry, unlike his father's grating cheese laugh. Jacob had the muscle of a well-built man, at least that's what Jacob thought he'd have when he was older, and his father was big and powerful, so Jacob guessed he was in the middle of his parents, meaning his mother was skinny. Jacob was tall for his age, and his father short. So his mother was tall, skinny, probably green or blue eyes, high cheek bones, a good laugh, and unruly hair. Jacob's hair was bright red and stuck out in every direction, despite Jacob's attempts to comb it. So, Jacob used his non-existent artistic talents to draw his mother. His father was a poor man, so Jacob had to be resourcful to draw anything. He took the flowers of rich people's garden and used them as his paints (he heard someone saw Indians do that). He also got a pencil form a high school girl who that he was adorable, and a piece of paper form another junior-high girl. And so, Jacob had a picture of his mother. But, as it would've been evertually, Jacob's father abondoned him. He took everything with him, including Jacob's picture. He sold the house, and didn't even bother to try to get Jacob in an orphanage. And so, Jacob was alone. As a young child he could use his cuteness to get food and blankets and such, but as he grew older it became increasingly obvious that wasn't going to work much longer. And so, that was when Jacob became a thief.

((Just so you know, this is present-day but in an empire like Rome.))
He learned to be stealthy and swift, using his cunning to get away when his speed could not. Despite what he had thought before, Jacob was beginning to be just as big and strong as his father. Fortunatly, he wasn't too big to run fast, and his muscle ended up saving him time and tiem again when he had to knock somebody out. He secretly learned karate as well, watching the moves form outside and going home to practice them. He was never caught, but one day when he was 17 he did almost get caught...
He had stolen a hot dog from the hot dog stand (his dinner) when an off-duty cop saw him. Her name was Tara Arteaga, a 16-year old who graduated high-school two years early. She just became a cop, and had only caught one thief before. Her parents were some of the richest of the Lords and Ladies of the empire, and so even if she wasn't a third-degree black belt she might not have been on the squad. There was a special squad made only for women, as they weren't allowed in the army, and were the cops of the empire, watching over the civilians while the army could invade somewhere else without leaving anyone behind.
Tara saw the handsome red-head steal the hot dog, and immediatly chased after him, not remembering she didn't have her gun with her. She thought she could handle him without help, so she didn't call for it. 'He's fast!' Tara thought as she started breathing harder. Somewhere during the chase, Tara lost her walkie-talkie.
Jacob looked over his shoulder at the blonde woman, and smiled. She was already breathing hard. He thought up a plan in his mind, just in case she proved to be hard to lose. He took many turns and was far ahead when he turned a wrong corner and ended up a dead end. There was a fire escape there, but it was 13 feet off the ground, impossible to reach. Two of Jacob couldn't touch the bottom, though he was over six feet tall. 'Now what?' Jacob thought furiously, turning around to face her.
Tara looked into his eyes, and was surprised to see that they were orange. His eyes were like newly lit bonfires, not even to it's full potential yet. The thief faced her, his shoulders squared, his eyes burning, his head high, his expression that of a determined snake. 'He looks like a snake,' Tara thought, 'I'd better not get bitten.'
'Do I use my powers?' Jacob thought, and then dismissed that idea. 'I vowed I would never use them,' And then the girl went into a karate stance, and Jacob smiled.
"I don't want to have to hurt you, karate girl."
"You won't get to," She answered back, and prepared to fight,

'He's no match for me,' Tara thought.
Taking this as his final answer, Jacob jumped as high as he could just as the girl charged at him with her fist raised. Jacob kicked her in the face, and she stumbled backwards. But she didn't drop her hands to cover her face, as most people would've done.'She was trained well,' thought Jacob, 'But not well enough.' He ran at her, and did a side kick to her stomach.
She easily dodged it and grabbed his ankle. Before Tara could pull him close and head-bash him, knocking him out, the thiefurned his back to Tara and put his hands on the ground, as if to do a handstand. Which is exactly what he did. He lifted his feet into the air, pulling hard and Tara came up with his leg. She let go in midair, and went flying hard into the brick wall. She fell to the ground, clutching her head. She had a terrible headache now. 'I won't underestimate him again,' She thought, shakily standing up. When he turned to run away, not thinking she'd recover so quickly, Tara leaped and tackled him from behind. She punched the back of his neck hard, at a pressure point.
Jacob could feel the girl tackle him, and was about to throw her to the ground when she punched his neck, and Jacob fell to his knees. He breathed harder, and everything started to get blurry. He could faintly feel her getting up and of of him, and he intended to get up and fight again, but his legs refused to move. 'What?' Jacob thought, but before he could think of what to do, he fell face forward and fell asleep.
Tara wiped her forehead, saying, "Whoo. He's a tough fighter," She leaned down, and turned him over. His eyes were closed, 'He's knocked out,' Tara thought, 'But not for long.'
Thinking about her options, she said them out loud. "One, I could leave him here. No way. Two, I could run and get help. He might be awake and gone by then. Three, I could carry him to the sidewalk and yell for help. Not likely I'd be able to carry him. Or four, I use my belt and tie him up to question him when he wakes up." Deciding on the last one, and thankful these pants didn't need a belt to hold them up, she took of her belt and lifted the thief up and pushed him against the wall. 'Option three would not have worked,' She thought as she tied his hands together as best she could.
'Hopefully he won't be able to get out of that,p/i]' Tara thought, 'And now I just sit back and wait.'
