I walk back into the house, fuming. I feel like I'm going to explode. I'm shaking from anger. Emily is one of my best friends and knows better than anyone the way I feel about him. Why would she suddenly think he wasn't the right guy? I yell at my mom to come downstairs. She ascends 5 minutes later dressed to the nines. "Whoa! You got a hot date or something?" My mom is a realistate agent and doesn't require a stunning wardrobe unless she's showing a house. "Yes, as a matter of fact. I do. I have a lunch date with a client." she says checking herself in the mrrior my the stairs. My mom has always been a classic beauty. Tall, blonde, and a great figure even after three kids. People say I look like her but I don't believe it. I'm average height, a brunette, and a chest the size of Mount Rushmore. I don't really see the similarity.

"Can you drive me to school? Christina hijacked my car." She sighs. "that sister of yours... Of course I'll drive you. Let's go." She answers and glances once more at her reflection in the mirror. And then we walk outside to the car.

Once at school I wave bye to my mom and walk into the building where I am promptly run over by a guy coming out of the office. "Oh sorry," a low voice says. I roll my eyes not even bothering to look at my attacker.. "No problem," I mutter and start walking away. "Hey wait up!" yells the guy. I turn around and finally look at the boy who was the cherry on top of my wonderful day only to have my mouth fall open in surprise. "Do I...know you?" I ask staring at him. "Christ Anna! Is that you?" And I know who it is. "Owen!" I cry and throw my arms around him. It's Owen Thomas. He and I had been best friends in middle school but he moved away in seventh grade and we eventually lost touch. "I don't believe it! What are you doing back?" I ask incredously when I finally let go of him. He laughs and picks up the books I'd knocked out of his hands when I'd throw myself into his arms. "Mom and Dad decided they didn't like Washington D.C. as much as good old Waldorf. So here I am." I still can't believe it. I'm standing there looking at the boy who had refused to disect a frog in 6th grade because it looked like his pet toad, Irving. The boy who I towered over all through middle school...well he wasn't so short now. I barely came up to his shoulder. He looked..well differnet in a good way. A kind of hot way actually. His floppy brown hair hung in his eyes as always but now it looked way better than it ever had. He was tan and from my hug I could tell he was not the scrawy little kid he used to be. Oh my god! What am I thinking?! It's Owen! "You look great Anna," he's saying. "Yeah sure," I say rolling my eyes. "Really," he says. "I missed you." "Me too," i say smiling up at him. My day, which had started out so terrible was starting to look up. Until I say Chris, heading our way. Looking very mad. Yes very mad indeed.

"Hey Chris," I say when he comes up. "Hey baby," he answers and puts his arm around me waist, which I know is for the benifit of Owen. It's staring back off. The girl's mine! "Who's your friend?" He ask glaring at Owen, who's looking like he's trying not to laugh, "Chris, this is Owen. Owen this is my boyfriend Chris." "Hey man," Owen says holding out his hand. Chris ignores it and turns to me. "Are we still on for tonight?" he asks. "Of course," I say and then Chris kisses me long and hard. In right of Owen. Oh God. "I'll see you later," says with one finally kiss and a glare at Owen and walks away. "Nice guy," Owen says sarcastically. "Sorry about that. He gets jealous sometimes. He probably saw me hugging you." Owen smiles. "Not that there's anything to worry about," he says. '' Of course not," I say watching Chris disappear into the crowds. "So what are you and him up to tonight?" he asks with a smirk. "That's none of your business," I say grinning at him. "Oh that of thing. I got ya'" I smile. I can't help it. I love being with him. He can always make me smile. "Who do have for homeroom? Do you need help finding it?" i ask. "Turner," he says. "I think I can find it." "Okay," I say. I give him one final hug and this time his arms go around me too." Call me later. The number's the same. Not that you bothered to call it the last 3 years." I say not really meaning to sound that harsh. "Ouch," he says putting his hand over his heart as if I'd stabbed him. I laugh. "I'll see you later," I say over my shoulder as I walk away. "Hey Anna!" I turn back around. "You really do look great," Owen says with a heartfelt smile and walks away in the other direction. I walk to my homeroom with a smile on my face.

I walk into my homeroom and take my usual seat next to Emily. "Look about this morning-" she says. "Don't worry about it. It's already forgotten. You'll never guess who I just saw!" I squeal. "Don't tell me! Orlando Bloom?" she replies sarcastically. I roll my eyes. "No! Owen Thomas!" "Are you serious? He's back?" "Yes and he's really diferent." "You mean he's not the skinny little nerd he used to be?" "No, he's not," I say back. "Wow. He's back for good?" "I think so." "No doubt you and him will be as thick as thieves again?" "I don't know," I say thoughtfully. "We've both changed." "A lot."

The rest of the day flew by. All I could think about was Owen and how he was back. I still couldn't believe it. And the way Chris had gotten jealous! It was laughable! Jealous over Owen? Boy did he have it wrong. But Owen was changed now alot. All morning I heard titters from almost all the girl population of the Culpepper High School student body about the cute new guy. Only a few of us had known Owen before so only we knew about his magnificent transformation. He was all I could think about. I'd forgotten about Chris and our..um plans for the evening. Until I saw him 6th period. He was hanging out with his buddies as usual in the one class we had together. Health. It was normally a freshman class but neither of us could fit it into our shecdules until this year. It is seriously just a blow off class. We hardly do anything except watch movies and take short, simple notes. I walk over to him. "Hey Chris," I say as I saunter over. "Hi," he says barely acknowledging me. He goes back to laughing with his friends who seem as confused as I am about his snub of me. This makes me mad. I grab his shirt sleeve and pull him into the hall. "We need to talk," I hiss at him. "Oh really? I thought you were too busy talking with Owen to talk to me." "Owen is just an old friend. That's all. I told you." "You weren't hugging him like a friend. You were all over him!" "I haven't seen him in 3 years! It was just a hug! It wasn't like we were making out or anything!" Chris sighs. " I know, I'm sorry baby. You know I just get jealous sometimes. Forgive me?" he asks putting arms around my waist. "Okay. You're forgiven." "Good," he says with a smile and then kisses me lightly on the lips, resulting in cheers and hoots and whistles from the rest of our health class. "Oh and I can't make it tonight." "What!" Tonight was our night to finally be alone. My sisters and mom were all going out. "I'm really sorry baby. I have to take Josh and Cody to their karate lesson." "It's fine," I say. Hey, I know what it's like having siblings. "Some other time." "Yeah, some other time," he agrees and then wee go to join the class.

During lunch I had a mission. Get my car keys back from Christina. I saw her in the snack bar line and more importantly her bag left on her lunch table. Sitting there. Calling to me. I sneak over quickly, thanking the lord that none of her friends were there. Just as I'm rummaging through it, a male voice behind me says,"That's invasion of privacy, you know?" I turn around to find Owen grinning at me and holding a lunch tray. "It's not invasion of pricvacy if you're retrieving a stolen item from a sibling, which I am," I tell him and find my keys wedged at the bottom of Christina's bag under about a ton of make-up and beauty supplies. I hold them up to Owen feeling triuphmant. "See?" 'Yeah, I see. See your sister heading this way." "Oh god. I got to get out of here!" Owen drops his tray on the table and grabs my arm. "Come on I know a quick getaway," he says and starts steering me to the stage. Our school which is not a small school is still trying raise money for an auditorium. Until then the cafeteria also houses the stage. I follow owen and start to look back until Owen stops me. "Rule number one of commtting a crime... or trying not to get caught," he adds when I try to protest I'm wasn't committing a crime. "Don't look back and don't run." I am amazed. "You sound like you have some experience in the matter." i say when we are safely behind the red cutain. Owen peeks through the small opening of the curtain and then turns to me with a mischeavious grin. "The coast is clear. And I just might have some experience." he says. Will wonders never cease? This coming from the boy who wouldn't even ditch P.E. for fear of getting caught even though the coaches never took roll. "i guess there's a lot I don't know about you now," I saw sitting on a bench, left over from the drama club's production of My Fair Lady. "Yeah, I guess so. I don't know you anymore either," He adds sitting beside me. "You drive, you have a boyfriend... but still fight with your sister and steal each other's stuff," he says with a smile. "Hey, she stole my car first! If we weren't family I'd have her ass aressted!" I protest. Owen laughs." I'm sure you would." In the dim lighting of the stage I notice even more how good looking he is.

"I know you're busy with Chris tonight..." Owen says. "actucally I'm not. He cancelled." "Really. Well do you want to do something tonight? For old times sake?" If I didn't have a boyfriend I could have sworn Owen was asking me out. "Yeah, sure," I hear myself saying. "That'd be fun."

"Do you think it's safe?" I ask Owen peering through the slit in the curtain. Christina has sat down at her table with her friends and doesn't seem to notice someone has rummaged through her bag.

Owen came and stood behind me. Really close I might add. He looked through the slit into the cafeteria. "I think so," he says. "But we might want to go out the back way." "Back way?" I ask but I'm thinking, We? and trying to ignore how fast how heart suddenly started beating and hoping he couldn't hear it. "Yes, the back way. Follow me." What choice do I have? I follow him.

He leads me to the back of the stage behind the bunk beds and chairs from some bygone play from the past to a door I never knew was there. He opens it and a flood of bright white lights blinds me as we step through it. "Viola," he says. We are I see, after my eyes have adjusted in the choir hallway. "Wow," I say. "You're here one day and you already know your way around?" Owen just grins. "I used to come here in elementary school for tutoring and when I got bored I'd wander around." "What about the tutor?" "I always told him I was going to the bathroom," he replies with a smile. We start walking down the hall. Some music drifts from under the door of one of the practice rooms. An old crooner song like Frank Sinatra. "May I may this dance?" Owen asks. I laugh. Dancing with Owen? In the middle of a hallway? Why the hell not? "You may," I say and hold out my hands. Owen grabs one of my hands and I place the other on his shoulder. His free hand goes to my waist, pulling me closer to him. I'm suddenly speechless as we sway to the music, waltzing across the linoleum. All I can think about is the way his hand feels on my waist, his hand in mine. If he notices he doesn't say anything. He's as silent as me, humming long to the song. The song ends but we don't pull away. We just stand there looking at each other. Our eyes locked. It's like something passes between us. Unheard and unseen. We're trapped in a spell. I find myself looking at his lips and thinking about what it would be like to kiss them and-suddenly a burst of applause sounds making us come to our senses and break the spell. A group of students are standing there watching us and clapping like crazy. I pull away from Owen and I feel the warmth of a blush rise in my cheeks. We both grin kind of sheepishly and Owen takes a bow and I a curtsy and then I get out of there as fast as I can. Once outside in the courtyard I can breath. I sit down on a bench and Owen joins me. "Well that was fun," he says laughing. "It was. You're a lovely dancer. Where'd you learn?" "My mom made me do ballroom dancing lessons in D.C." I smile at him. I can't help it. He's just surprising so much. It's like he's a whole other person. "You? Ballroom dancing? I'd never have thought of it." "Yeah me neither. But it was fun," he says shrugging his shoulders. The bell rings and students come flooding from everywhere. "I'll see you later Anna," he says standing up. I stand too and wave as I start walking to my next class, that song stuck in my head.

The rest of the day flew by with me trying to dodge Christina. It was my car but she could always find some humiliating story from my past to black mail me with. I found myself trying to avoid Chris as well. Maybe I felt guilty about the whole dancing thing with Owen...but we were just dancing1 Only a few kids saw us anyway but gossip spread like wild fire around here epsecially from the mouth of one of my good friends Lydia. A couple couple could break up in front of her 1st period and the whole school knew about it by second. She wasn't cruel about it or anything just you know...honest. I was worried someone would tell her or that Chris would find out. I like to think we can trust each other and have an open relationship but this morning with Owen proved that all was not perfect in paradise.

I was walking to my car after the last bell. Quite fast as I was trying to avoid my sister when a knock sounded on my window scaring me half to death. I screamed and dropped my keys. I turned to find Owen grinning in my window. I pushed a button and rolled it down. "Are you trying to give me a heart attack?" I asked. "No, just a charming smile so you'll give me a ride home," he said. I smiled. "Get in." In two strides his long legs carried him to my passenger side door. He hopped in beside me and whistled. "Nice car Anna," he said staring around appreciately. "Thanks," I said back, just a touch of pride creeping into my tone. "Do you not drive?" "I just haven't gotten my Maryland license and the rents won't let me drive until I do." "That sucks. Where do you live now?" I asked turning out of the student parking lot. "Just head towards your house," he says mysteriously. "Okay," I say suspicously.

"How was your first day?" I ask just to start a conversation. "Fine, seems the whole school knew about me being back. Is Lydia still around? I think she might have had something to do with it?" "She just might," I say turing into my neighborhood. "Now where do you live?" "Chestnut," he says with a grin. "You're kidding!" I say to him. Chestnut was the street that connectted mine and Chris'. "No it's true," "That is so awesome! Do you still want to do something tonight?"

"Yeah, sure. What did you have in mind?" Owen asks. "I don't know. You can just come over for dinner and watch movies or something. I know my mom will be thrilled to see you," I say with a grin. "I know and that sounds great. What time should I come over?" "Anytime is fine," I say and pull up to the house Owen points me to. "Thanks for the ride Anna," he says and starts to get out. "No problem. I'll see you later." and with a wave I'm gone.
