I. Introduction a. Hook: b. Background Information: Afghanistan has been under oppressive ruling for almost 30 years, starting with the Soviet occupation in 1979 and ending in 2001 one under the Taliban’s rule. American presence has given them freedom. Rights of women increased. Ethnic tensions between Pashtun and Hazara. The Kite Runner: Oppression of ethnic groups and of the government. Hassan’s loyalty to Amir, despite that Amir won’t stand up for him. A Thousand Splendid Suns: Oppression of women by men and the blind eye the government turns. Mariam’s loyalty to Rasheed. c. Thesis: Opression is evident in every society but because of the extreme loyalty shown by some it is often overlooked and not dealt with. II. 1st Question a. Point: Show the many ways in which Afghan’s are oppressed due to ethnic relations. (The Kite Runner) b. Quote: "You're bothering me very much. In fact, you bnother me more than this Hazara here. How can you talk to him, play with him, let him touch you?" He said, his voice dripping with disgust. Wali and Kamal nodded and grunted in agreement. Assef narrowed his eyes. Shook his head. When he spoke again, he sounded as baffled as he looked. "How can you call him your 'friend'?" – Majority of Afghan Pashtun feelings towards the Hazara.
